“The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” is 55 years old and has been covered innumerable times (most famously by Roberta Flack in 1972) but you’ve never heard it like this. Recorded for The Flaming Lips’ quite good Heavy Fwends collaborative album (which features appearances from Nick Cave, Chris Martin and, erm, Ke$ha), the track is turned from soul ballad standard to a ten-minute ethereal shoegaze monolith. It’s the stuff of dreams, literally.

2. Played on Californication this week. I called it the first time I saw that show: One of the best television shows, week in and week out, ever. Upper tier, like The Sopranos. Deadwood. Larry Miller Show. Runkel jacking off, the smarmy kid, the smarmy kid getting beat down by the gang, the beautiful singer eye fucking him during her beautiful, erotic song….. it has it ALL.
3. Ol’ Neil Young just has some hard, solid, awesome american tunes. This one, Harvest Moon, about a dozen others. He’s a reeeal smart sumbitch and when he made money he bought up cheap land around San Francisco way back when and now it’s worth a fortune. I saw him on a documentary. Backstage, he just chewed a guy’s ass out hard for being off rhythm or key or something. Mean, sharp, germanic ass chewing.
